US Healthcare Costs Are Rising

If you do not live in the United States, American healthcare can seem incredibly confusing. Unlike most developed nations, the US does not have a single, government-run universal healthcare system. Instead, millions of Americans buy private insurance through a government program officially called the Affordable Care Act, but widely known as Obamacare.

Recently, news broke that "premiums" (the monthly fee Americans pay to keep their insurance active) are jumping by an average of 13% to 15%. To understand why, it helps to understand how the system works.

Obamacare is a government-regulated digital marketplace. Instead of the government providing the doctors, private insurance companies compete on a website for customers. To make these private plans affordable, the US government gives financial discounts, called subsidies, to lower-income citizens. The system also legally forces insurance companies to accept everyone, even if they are already sick.

So, why are the prices suddenly spiking?
First, the actual cost of medical care in the US is rising. Hospitals are charging more, and expensive new lifestyle and weight-loss drugs are highly sought after, forcing insurance companies to pay out massive amounts of money.

Second, a set of temporary financial boosts from the government has ended. During the pandemic, the government gave extra discounts to help citizens pay their monthly bills. Now that those extra discounts have expired, regular people have to pay a much larger share out of their own pockets.

Finally, because prices are going up, younger and healthier people are opting out of buying insurance entirely. This leaves the marketplace with a smaller group of mostly older, sicker people. Because this group costs more to treat, insurance companies are raising prices for everyone left in the system to cover the bills.

Ultimately, Obamacare is a mix of private business and government help and right now, ordinary Americans are feeling the squeeze.
The U.S. Healthcare is a $6 trillion industry, out of which 2 trillion is spent on insurance premiums. Citizens pay at least $660 billion directly out of the pocket for care.
