Dueling Protests in Tel Aviv Over Potential Coalition
yunus
Thousands of demonstrators gathered at Habima Square in Tel Aviv on October 31, 2026, to demand the formation of a Jewish-Arab ruling coalition, while right-wing counter-protesters rallied in opposition. The demonstrations followed an election deadlock that left both major political blocs without a clear path to a majority.
The Election Deadlock
General elections held earlier in the week resulted in a fractured Knesset. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc secured 53 seats, short of the 61 needed for a majority. The main opposition bloc, led by Gadi Eisenkot, won 48 seats. Neither side can form a government without negotiating with third-party factions.

Historic Arab Party Gains
Arab-led parties, including Ra'am and the Joint List, won an unprecedented 19 seats. This represents a 64 percent increase in votes compared to the 2022 elections. If Eisenkot allies with these Arab-led factions, the combined anti-Netanyahu forces would control a 67-seat majority in the 120-seat Knesset. However, Eisenkot has previously ruled out entering into a coalition with Arab parties.

Contested Allegations and Counter-Protests
The two demonstrations presented starkly different demands for the future government:
Prior to the rallies, Netanyahu publicly accused Palestinian-Israeli parties of utilizing illicit funding from Qatar to alter the election outcome. The Qatari government has officially rejected the allegation, calling it a disinformation campaign.
President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to grant a mandate to a party leader to begin formal coalition negotiations by Thursday, November 5, 2026.
The two demonstrations presented starkly different demands for the future government:
- The Coalition Rally: Approximately 2,000 left-wing demonstrators urged opposition leaders to bridge historic divides and partner with Arab factions to oust Netanyahu.
- The Counter-Protest: Right-wing demonstrators mobilized to oppose any agreement with Arab parties. Supporters echoed Netanyahu's campaign rhetoric, framing the Arab factions as hostile entities and alleging electoral fraud.
