Indian Gold Prices Are Falling

yunus
Global gold prices fell by nearly 7% in October 2026, dropping below $4,000 per ounce. Concurrently, informal and illegal gold imports into India surged over 1,500% to a three-year high of 50 metric tons during the third quarter. This divergence is driven by a conflict between global monetary policy and Indian domestic trade regulations.

The Drop in Global Prices
Persistent high global interest rates have made yield-bearing assets, such as U.S. Treasury bills and bonds, highly lucrative for international investors. Because gold is a non-yielding asset, capital has rotated out of precious metals and into fixed-income securities. This systematic sell-off has driven down the global spot price of gold.

The Rise in Illegal Indian Imports
India relies heavily on foreign imports to satisfy its deeply entrenched cultural demand for gold. Because purchasing foreign gold requires selling Indian Rupees for foreign currency, massive import volumes strain India's foreign exchange (forex) reserves and widen its trade deficit.

To protect its forex reserves, the Indian government increased the total import duty on gold to 15% in May 2026. Rather than curbing demand, this tax created a massive price gap between domestic legal gold and the international market. To evade the 15% tax penalty, buyers and distributors shifted to unofficial cash markets, driving the spike in grey-market imports.

The Freeze in Legal Trade
Despite lower global prices, India's official, legal imports plunged over 81% in September. Domestic wholesalers and jewelers anticipate that the global downward trend will continue. Consequently, they are delaying legal inventory restocking to avoid buying assets that may lose value before the peak festive and wedding seasons, leaving the underground market to temporarily absorb ongoing consumer demand.
