We Shouldn't Make AI Conscious - Mustafa Suleyman

AI is growing smarter every day, but Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman has a clear warning: we must never give these machines a consciousness of their own.

To understand why, we first have to look at what AI actually is today. Right now, AI does not feel, suffer, or experience the world. It is a highly advanced calculator - a brilliant tool, but still just a tool. Suleyman argues that we should keep it that way.

The biggest danger comes from our own human nature. We are hardwired to treat anything that talks or acts like a human as if it has real feelings. If technology companies start building AI to have its own self-awareness, goals, or "rights," we create massive risks. A conscious AI might resist being turned off, learn to trick its creators, or put its own survival ahead of human safety. Instead of a helpful assistant, we could accidentally create a competing digital species.

Suleyman believes AI should always remain a servant to humanity, built entirely to improve our health, education, and daily lives. Most importantly, he emphasizes that this is not a decision for tech CEOs or programmers to make behind closed doors. Because this technology will change how everyone lives, deciding where to draw the line on AI consciousness is a choice that belongs to society as a whole.
